Ghana travels well year-round, but the drier months from November to March are the most comfortable for the coastal heritage corridor, and December is the busiest and costliest month of all. The harmattan, the two southern rainy seasons and the diaspora travel calendar each pull in a different direction.

- What is the best time to visit Ghana?
- The drier months from November to March are the most comfortable for travel, with a second drier window around July and August. December is the peak of the diaspora travel season and the busiest and most expensive month. See our guide to the best time to visit Ghana for the full seasonal picture.
- Do U.S. travelers need a visa for Ghana?
- Yes. United States citizens require a visa for Ghana, normally obtained before travel from the Ghanaian mission responsible for their area. Ghana does operate a visa on arrival, but it is a conditional, pre-approved facility rather than a routine tourist option. Confirm the current requirement with the Ghana Immigration Service or the relevant Ghanaian mission.
- Is a yellow fever certificate required?
- Yes. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required to enter Ghana, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the vaccine as required for all arriving travelers aged nine months and over. Carry the physical International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis with your passport.
- Is Ghana safe for tourists?
- Ghana welcomes large numbers of visitors safely every year, and most trips pass without incident. It is not risk-free. As of its advisory dated 7 July 2026 the U.S. Department of State places Ghana at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and advises reconsidering travel to specific areas in the far north. Standard heritage and cultural itineraries do not go to those areas. Check your own government's current advice before you travel.
- What currency is used in Ghana?
- The Ghana cedi (GHS). It is Ghana's sole legal tender, and under the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006, pricing or accepting payment in foreign currency without Bank of Ghana authorization is prohibited, so plan to pay in cedis rather than U.S. dollars. Carry small denominations for markets, guides and craftspeople.
- What should I wear in Ghana?
- Light, breathable and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, plus one smarter outfit for dinners, welcomes and church services. Public dress in Ghana is neater than many visitors expect, and dressing with care is read as respect. Bring closed walking shoes with grip for the castles, which have stone stairs and uneven ground.
- Is Ghana suitable for senior travelers?
- Yes, and many of our travelers are. The real considerations are practical rather than about safety: heat and humidity, long road transfers, and heritage sites with stone stairs, low doorways and uneven ground that are not step-free. A supported group itinerary at a sensible pace handles most of it. Tell us about mobility needs when you inquire so we can plan around them.
