- Do I need a passport to visit the Cayman Islands?
- Almost certainly yes, and the rule is set by Customs and Border Control rather than by any outside authority. Everyone arriving must produce a passport, or another valid document establishing identity and nationality or place of permanent residence, and it must be valid beyond the date of your return ticket. There is one narrow exemption and it is widely misquoted: a person resident in the United States who arrives directly from that country, produces a valid United States Alien Registration Card and holds a return or round trip ticket may be permitted to enter for a period not exceeding thirty days without a passport. That is the concession that produces the thirty day figure you will see repeated. If you are carrying a valid passport you are not using it, and the general visitor rule applies to you instead.
- Does my passport need six months of validity?
- No, and this is one of the few destinations where the usual habit is the wrong answer. Customs and Border Control requires that your document is valid beyond the date of your return ticket, and states in terms that it does not have to be valid for over six months where that is more than the length of your stay. The practical risk runs the other way: an airline check in desk applies whatever rule it has been given, so if yours works to the six month habit you want to find that out before you are standing at it.
- How long can I stay in the Cayman Islands?
- Visitors may be granted permission to land for a period of up to six months. That period may be extended for further periods not exceeding six months, on application to the Director of Customs and Border Control. It is permission granted at the border rather than an automatic entitlement, so be ready to show a paid up return or onward ticket and, if asked, evidence that you can support yourself and any dependants for the length of your stay.
- Is the Cayman Islands a country?
- Not in the sovereign sense, and the distinction has a practical consequence. The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory, which is why there is no British Embassy there: the Cayman Islands authorities are the ones who will support a visitor who needs help. It runs its own border, issues its own currency through its own monetary authority and keeps its own institutions, while remaining under British sovereignty. Travelers from other countries should establish what consular assistance their own government maintains for the territory before they travel rather than after.

- The Cayman Islands dollar, issued and redeemed by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. You will not find an exchange rate on this site. - It normally runs from June to November. Read that as a season rather than a verdict: it describes when tropical systems are possible, not when they are likely on any given day, and a great many visits inside the window pass without weather worth mentioning.
