Cape Verde Festivals and Celebrations

The short version

Carnival in February, on São Vicente above all. Saints’ days through the summer, one island at a time. Tabanka on Santiago, which is older and means more than it looks.

Carnival

Mindelo’s carnival is the largest in the country and the one people travel for. It has the structure you would recognize from Brazil or Portugal, with organized groups, months of preparation and a parade that takes over the city, and it has a character of its own. February, dates moving with the calendar.

Carnival is also the one time of year when accommodation on São Vicente genuinely sells out, and it sells out a long way ahead. If this is the trip you want, book it as the first decision rather than the last.

The municipal saints’ days

Each island and town keeps its own patron saint’s day, and between roughly May and September there is almost always one somewhere. They combine a church procession with a great deal of music, food and dancing, and they are the most reliable way for a visitor to be somewhere genuinely local without arranging anything.

The best known include São João Baptista in June, marked strongly on Santo Antão and Brava, and Santa Maria and São Filipe in the same season on other islands. Ask locally which is next; the calendar is common knowledge and not always well published online.

Tabanka

Tabanka is the one worth understanding rather than just attending. It is a Santiago tradition that grew out of mutual aid societies formed among enslaved and freed Africans, and it combines a procession, drums, conch shells and a set of offices and roles that belong to the society rather than to the church. It was suppressed under colonial rule and it survived.

The Museu da Tabanca at Assomada, in the interior of Santiago, is where the tradition is documented, and it is the sensible first stop if the history interests you more than the spectacle. See Cape Verde and diaspora reconnection.

Music, which is not seasonal

The music calendar matters less here than elsewhere because live music is a normal week rather than an event. Mindelo in particular has bars where there is something on most nights. The Baía das Gatas festival in August, on São Vicente, is the big scheduled exception.

Practical notes

Festival crowds are the setting the FCDO has in mind when it names snatching and muggings, particularly in Praia and on Sal and Boa Vista. Carry what you need and leave the rest in the safe. See travel safety.
