Qatar for Senior Travelers

Short distances, excellent infrastructure, and one activity to decline

Updated 3 min read

The short version

This is an easy country to travel in later life. The distances are short, the roads are good, the hotels are new, the metro is step-free and air conditioned, and medical care is of a high standard. Two things need thought: the heat, and one excursion that is genuinely rough.

Pace and distance

Nothing is far. Al Zubarah is about two hours from the capital and everything else is less, which means a day out does not become an endurance event. Build in the middle of the day indoors rather than trying to push through it, and let the evening be the active part, which is what everyone here does anyway.

The dune driving

Dune bashing is sold alongside almost every desert trip and it is genuinely violent: repeated drops and hard lateral movement. If you have a back or neck problem, a heart condition, or recent surgery, decline it. The inland sea is worth going to see and you can get there and sit by the water without the rollercoaster part; ask the operator for exactly that rather than assuming it is on offer.

Health and insurance

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists routine vaccines for Qatar along with hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies, and routine cover is the half most often out of date in later life. Health insurance from an approved provider is mandatory for visitors, and the standard premium is 50 riyals per person per month. Beyond that, carry prescribed medication in its original packaging with documentation, because some medications legal elsewhere are illegal here and that rule does not soften with age. See the packing list.

The month matters more than anything else

A trip here in the cool season and the same trip in high summer are not the same trip. For an older traveller the season is the single largest decision. See best time to visit.
