Qatar Travel Safety Guide

The short version

There is no territorial travel advisory for Qatar. The British government does not advise against travel to any part of the country, and there is no regional risks page for it at all. That is unusual enough on this site to be worth saying plainly rather than burying.

What does need attention is the law, because several things that are unremarkable at home carry real penalties here, and none of them is obvious from the arrivals hall.

Alcohol

Only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars can sell alcohol. That is the whole rule, and it is neither the free-for-all of an airport duty free nor the outright prohibition people often assume. Residents can obtain alcohol on a permit system; a visitor drinks where it is licensed and not elsewhere. Being drunk in a public place can bring a prison sentence of up to six months or a fine of up to 3,000 riyals.

Drugs, and the medication in your bag

There is zero tolerance for drugs offences. Transit passengers found with even residual amounts may be arrested, which is worth reading twice: it applies to people who never intended to leave the airport. Some medications that are legal elsewhere are illegal in Qatar, so carry anything prescribed in its original packaging with the prescription, and check before you fly rather than after you land.

Photography

Photographing people without their consent can lead to imprisonment or a fine of up to 100,000 riyals. This is the single most likely way for an ordinary visitor with a camera to get into serious trouble, and it applies in markets and public spaces, not only around government buildings. Ask first.

Relationships and the law

Sex outside marriage is illegal in Qatar, for opposite-sex and same-sex couples alike. We state that as the law it is rather than as advice about who should travel where. The safety advice also records that Qatari law places a high burden of proof on the victim to demonstrate that sexual relations were not consensual, which is a fact anyone travelling should know in advance.

Health

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists routine vaccines for Qatar along with hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies. Discuss all of them with a travel clinic in good time rather than in the week before you fly.
