What to Pack for Qatar

Cover up rather than strip down, and bring the documents nobody thinks of

Updated 2 min read

The short version

Loose, light, covering clothes; serious sun protection; and your medication properly documented. The instinct in heat is to wear less, and in this climate and this country the opposite works better on both counts.

Clothes

Cotton and linen in loose cuts. Shoulders and knees covered is the standard that will never be wrong in public, and is expected at religious sites and in government buildings. A light scarf is useful for women to carry. Swimwear belongs at the pool and the beach and nowhere else. Bring one smarter set: restaurants here dress up more than most visitors expect.

Sun

A wide hat, real sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and a refillable bottle. There is no natural shade at Al Zubarah, on the Zekreet peninsula or at the inland sea, and the sun is doing work on your skin long before you feel hot.

Medication, and this is the important paragraph

Some medications that are legal elsewhere are illegal in Qatar. Carry everything prescribed in its original packaging with the prescription or a doctor's letter, and check the status of anything you rely on before you fly rather than at the border. This applies in transit as well as on entry. See travel safety.

Documents

Your passport with at least six months from arrival, and proof of the approved health insurance, which is a requirement rather than a suggestion. Keep a photograph of both somewhere you can reach without your bag. See visa and entry requirements.

Verify Before You Travel

Medication rules are on the FCDO entry requirements page and the dress and conduct expectations on the safety and security page. Next: culture and etiquette.
