Best Time to Visit Namibia

The quick answer

May to October is the main season, and Namibia is less tied to it than most safari countries — because its two headline attractions want different things.

• The desert — Sossusvlei, the Namib, the coast — is rewarding in almost any month. It is a landscape rather than a wildlife event, and it does not have a bad season.
• Etosha does. Its game viewing depends on animals concentrating at waterholes, which happens as the inland pans dry, so it improves steadily from June and peaks around September and October.

Season by season

May to August — dry and cool

The most comfortable traveling weather: clear skies, low humidity, warm days. Nights are genuinely cold, and in the desert can drop below freezing — visitors pack for the Namib and forget it is a desert in both directions. Etosha's game viewing is good and improving.

September and October — dry and hot

The best wildlife of the year at Etosha, and the hardest conditions. Daytime heat in the interior is serious by October, and the desert is punishing in the middle of the day. Early starts stop being optional.

November to April — the green season

Rain, where it comes at all, arrives as afternoon storms between January and April. The country greens, the skies become spectacular for photography, migrant birds arrive and Etosha's pan can hold water and flamingos. Game viewing is harder because animals disperse away from the waterholes.

Two practical points: gravel roads deteriorate and a few can wash out, and this is the low season, so rates fall and the popular lodges become bookable at short notice.

The two things that decide most itineraries

Sunrise at Sossusvlei

The dunes photograph best in the first and last hour of light, and the park gates open at sunrise — which is why staying inside the park gate rather than outside it changes what you can actually see. That is a booking decision, not a scheduling one, and it matters more than the month.

The coastal fog

Swakopmund and the coast are frequently cool and fogbound when the interior is hot and clear, because of the cold Benguela current offshore. Do not plan a beach day; plan a jacket. That fog is also what keeps the desert's specialized plants and animals alive, so it is the point rather than the problem.

How long you need

Namibia is enormous and its attractions are far apart, and this is the mistake most first-time visitors make. A route taking in Sossusvlei, the coast and Etosha involves serious driving. Ten days is comfortable; a week means either cutting one of the three or spending most of it in a vehicle.
