The declaration threshold

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that cash must be declared if the value is more than 10,000 Bermuda dollars.

Two things follow. The threshold is expressed in the local currency, so if you are carrying another currency the question is what it is worth, not what it says on the note. And a declaration is a form, not a penalty: the offense is failing to make one, and travelers who fall foul of these rules almost always do so by not asking.

What a trip here actually costs you, in the place it bites

The clearest cost statement in this whole register is a medical one. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that medication and medical treatment in Bermuda are very expensive, and that cases needing treatment Bermuda cannot provide are usually referred to either Baltimore or Boston in the USA.

That turns an insurance line item into the largest financial risk of the trip. A policy that covers medical expenses in the United States, and that covers repatriation by air ambulance, is not an upsell here. Our safety guide goes through the health record in full.

What you can buy, which is better news

The same record states that most types of medication are readily available in Bermuda, including UK brands. So the budgeting problem is price, not scarcity. If you take a regular prescription, bring it; if you need something ordinary, you will find it and you will pay for it.

The number this guide will not print

You will not find an exchange rate, a conversion or a statement of how the Bermuda dollar relates to any other currency on this page. It is one of the most widely repeated facts about the destination and not one of the eight sources in this guide's register states it.

That is a deliberate omission, not an oversight. A rate written from memory reads exactly like a rate taken from a central bank, and a reader has no way to tell them apart. Check the rate with your bank or a current market source on the day you change money, which is the only figure that would be worth anything in any case.
