Eating and Drinking in Bermuda

What this page does not do

It does not name a single thing to eat.

That is unusual enough to explain. Eight sources were gathered for this cluster, from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNESCO, the Government of Bermuda, the National Museum of Bermuda and the Bermuda National Trust. Between them they carry forty-four separately verified statements about entry rules, safety, law, health, heritage and celebration. Not one of them mentions Bermudian food.

The dishes a reader expects on this page are well known, and every one of them would have to be written here from memory. A dish named from memory reads exactly like a dish named from a source, and a reader has no way to tell them apart. This project's standing rule is that declining to publish is a result, so the list is not here.

What follows is everything the register genuinely supports about eating and drinking here, and it is more useful than a list of dish names in any case.

The drinking law, which catches visitors

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that it is illegal to drink alcohol in public outside of licensed premises.

That is a genuine trap. A drink carried out of a bar, taken onto a beach or opened on a bench is an offense, and it is the kind of thing that seems harmless in a place that feels relaxed. Bermuda is a separate legal jurisdiction to the United Kingdom and has its own laws, so no assumption imported from anywhere else applies.

Food, water and the vaccine record

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention records hepatitis A as recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Bermuda. Hepatitis A is the vaccine most closely associated with food and water, which is why it belongs on this page as much as on a health one. Discuss it with a travel health professional well before you go; the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office suggests beginning at least 8 weeks before your trip.

Nothing in this register advises against tap water, against any category of food, or against eating anywhere in particular. That is an absence of a warning, not a reassurance, and this page does not upgrade it into one.

What it will cost you

This register publishes no restaurant prices and no exchange rate, so it can give you no budget for a meal. What it does publish is a plain statement that medication and medical treatment in Bermuda are very expensive, which is the only direct evidence it holds about the cost of anything on the island. Where to find the answer this page cannot give

For what to eat, ask on the island. Bermuda's own tourism bodies, restaurants and residents are the authority on Bermudian food, and a recommendation from somebody standing in the place is worth more than a list assembled at a distance from nothing.
