Start from the jurisdiction

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that Bermuda is a separate legal jurisdiction to the United Kingdom and has its own laws.

That is the sentence to hold on to, because Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory and it is easy to assume the law travels with the flag. It does not. Nor does anything assumed from another island: Bermuda sits in the North Atlantic and is filed in the Caribbean Islands section of this site for the reader's convenience, not because it shares a legal system with anywhere in that sea.

Public conduct, which is regulated more closely than visitors expect

Two rules catch people who were not trying to break anything.

It is illegal for anyone to be topless in public. The record is explicit that this applies to anyone, and that there are no nude or topless beaches. It is not a beach-specific rule and it is not gendered.

It is illegal to drink alcohol in public outside of licensed premises. A drink taken out of a bar or opened on a bench is an offense. Our eating and drinking guide makes the same point, because it is the one most likely to be met over dinner.

Two categories of item to leave at home

Bermudian weapons law reaches further than most. The record names ammunition, including empty magazines, alongside air pistols and catapults. These are things that travel by accident in a sports bag rather than by intention.

The legal position on same-sex partnership, stated exactly

This is the one item on the page where the two obvious summaries are both wrong, so it is set out in the source's own terms.

Same-sex relationships are legal in Bermuda and domestic partnerships are allowed. Following a change in the law, same-sex partners can no longer marry, and marriages entered into before 14 March 2022 remain valid. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office describes public attitudes as tolerant but conservative.

Writing that marriage is legal here would be wrong; writing that it is illegal would also be wrong, and would misdescribe the position of couples whose marriages stand. Couples planning a trip, and particularly a ceremony, should read the current official advice directly rather than rely on any guide.

The day the island puts above the others

The Government of Bermuda records Bermuda Day as celebrated on the fourth Friday in May, notes that the first Bermuda Day Parade was held in 1979, and names Gombey troupes and a half-marathon derby among what the day carries.

It does not tell you what language is spoken in Bermuda, how people greet one another, what to wear to dinner, or how tipping works. None of it appears in this guide's register, and a custom described from memory is the easiest kind of invention to publish and the hardest for a reader to check. Everything above is a law with a source, which is a narrower page and a more honest one.
