The Best Time to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands

The season, and the number that gives it scale.

The National Hurricane Center publishes that the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. These islands lie inside that window, and it is the only seasonal range on this page because it is the only one an official body states.

What makes this guide unusual is that the same source also publishes the scale. Based on a 30-year climate period from 1991 to 2020, an average Atlantic season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. That is the whole basin across six months, not a forecast for one island in one week, and holding both numbers together is the honest way to read the risk.

And the sentence most guides leave out.

The National Hurricane Center adds, in the same passage, that tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates.

So the season is a window in which storms usually form, not a fence. A trip inside it is very often untouched; a trip outside it is not guaranteed. What the dates are genuinely good for is deciding which bookings to make flexible, when travel insurance covering disruption earns its price, and when to read the current forecast before you fly rather than after.

What this guide will not tell you.

No monthly temperature, no rainfall total, no sea temperature and no best month. No source in this guide's register publishes one, and both of the territory's tourism websites refuse to answer this environment at all, so there is nothing to take from them.

One dated figure, and why the date matters.

If you are timing a trip around the national park, note that the Park Service publishes a Trunk Bay Expanded Amenity Fee in a table headed 2024, at 5 dollars for an individual day pass for visitors 16 years and older.

That is what the published table says rather than what you will be charged on the day, and the distinction is the point. Fees are reviewed. Check the current figure with the park before you budget around it.
