It is possible to leave one part of this country in a blizzard and land three hours later somewhere it has not rained for a month. That is the single most useful thing to understand about weather here: there is no national climate to prepare for, only the specific one where you are going, and often more than one on a single trip.
The regional picture
The Northeast and Upper Midwest run cold, snowy winters and warm humid summers, with a short, brilliant fall in between. The Southeast and Gulf Coast are humid for most of the year and genuinely hot from late spring into early fall. The Great Plains sit between air masses and get the most abrupt changes in the country, which is why a fifty degree swing inside a day is unremarkable there. The desert Southwest is dry and hot, with large differences between day and night and a late summer monsoon that brings sudden heavy rain. The mountain West is governed by elevation more than latitude. The Pacific Northwest is mild and damp with a dry summer window, and coastal California is famously moderate and famously foggy in the months visitors assume will be sunny.
Elevation is the variable people underestimate
In the interior West, altitude decides the weather more than the calendar does. A valley town can be shirtsleeve warm while a pass an hour away is under snow, and high roads in the national parks often stay closed into early summer. Afternoon thunderstorms build over high country with real speed, which is why exposed hiking there is a morning activity. Carrying a warm layer in July is not overcaution at elevation; it is the normal way to dress.
The hazard calendar
Each region has a season when its characteristic weather turns dangerous, and the National Weather Service publishes safety material hazard by hazard rather than as one document.
- Heat. The most consistently lethal weather hazard in the country, and the one most often underestimated because it arrives without drama. Desert and southern summers both qualify.
- Hurricanes. Atlantic and Gulf coasts, second half of the year. The effects reach well inland as rain and flooding.
- Tornadoes. Most frequent across the center of the country in spring and early summer, though they occur elsewhere and in other months.
- Flash flooding. The hazard that kills people in cars. Desert washes and mountain canyons flood from rain falling somewhere you cannot see.
- Winter storms. Plains and mountain interstates close, sometimes for a day or more, and the closure is often the safe outcome rather than the problem.
- Lightning. Summer afternoons, especially at elevation and on open water.
- Wildfire smoke. Late summer in the West, and it degrades air quality far from any visible fire.
How to read a forecast here
Two habits do most of the work. First, check the forecast for the specific place rather than the region, because a mountain range or a coastline can make two towns fifty miles apart behave differently. Second, pay attention to watches and warnings rather than only to the temperature: a watch means conditions are favorable for something, a warning means it is happening or about to. Most of the serious trouble travelers get into with American weather comes from treating a warning as background noise.
Driving in it
Long distances mean weather changes during a drive rather than before it. In winter that means checking road conditions as well as the sky, because the plains and mountain West close highways rather than slow them. In summer it means respecting the standing advice about water over a road, which is never worth driving into regardless of how shallow it looks. If a route crosses a mountain pass, look up whether it is open at all before setting out in the shoulder seasons.
