Best Time to Visit Tanzania

The short version

Tanzania does not have one best time, because it does not have one climate. The country runs from the Indian Ocean to the summit of Kilimanjaro, and altitude changes conditions faster than the calendar does. The honest answer is that the right month depends on which of three trips you are taking.

If you are here for the migration

The Serengeti migration is not an event with a date. UNESCO describes it as an annual circular trek of roughly 1,000 km, by around two million wildebeest plus hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras, spanning Tanzania and Kenya, following pasture and water.

Two things follow from that. The herds are somewhere in the ecosystem all year, so there is no month when the migration is absent. And because they follow rainfall rather than a timetable, where they are in any given week is a forecast, not a booking. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee a river crossing on a particular date is selling you certainty they do not have.

What a planner can do is position you well: choose the part of the ecosystem the herds are most likely to be in for your dates, and build in enough days that a week of unusual rain does not decide your whole trip.

If you are climbing Kilimanjaro

Trekking conditions are governed by the mountain, not by the safari calendar, and the two do not always recommend the same month. Kilimanjaro National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage property and the route, the pace and the acclimatisation schedule matter far more to a successful summit than the month does. Treat the climb as its own planning problem with its own advice.

If you are going to Zanzibar

The coast is a different climate again, hot and humid where the highlands are temperate. Stone Town is a year round destination for its architecture and history. Beach conditions and sea state vary through the year, and the coast has its own rhythm of religious and cultural observances that are worth knowing about before you book.

We are not publishing one, because Tanzania's rainfall pattern varies by zone, the seasonal outlook is issued and revised by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority, and a table frozen into a web page in one year quietly becomes wrong in the next.
