Tanzania for Senior Travelers

Altitude, distance from hospitals, and pacing an itinerary so the trip is still enjoyable on day nine.

The short version

Tanzania suits older travelers well, and the itineraries that go wrong are almost always the ones that tried to do too much. Three things deserve attention before booking: altitude, distance from medical care, and pace.

Altitude

Much of the northern safari circuit sits high, and the Ngorongoro crater rim is higher still. Altitude affects people with cardiac and respiratory conditions independently of how fit they are, and the effect is not proportional to how strenuous the day looks. Sitting in a vehicle at altitude is still being at altitude.

If anyone in the group has a heart or lung condition, that is a conversation with their doctor before deposits are paid, not after.

Distance from care

The parks are a long way from major hospitals and evacuation is by air. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is essential on this itinerary, and the policy should be checked for age limits and pre-existing condition exclusions rather than assumed. This is the single most common gap we find in group paperwork.

Bring enough of any prescription medicine for the whole trip plus a margin, in original packaging, in hand luggage, with a copy of the prescription.

The vehicles

Safari vehicles sit high and are entered several times a day, often on uneven ground. For many travelers this is the deciding practical detail of the whole trip. It is usually solvable, with the right vehicle and support, but it needs to be raised at the planning stage. Our accessible travel guide goes into it.

Pace

The most useful thing we do for older groups is take things out of the itinerary. Fewer camp changes, longer stays, a light aircraft hop instead of a seven hour road transfer, and at least one genuinely unscheduled morning. Game drives start early and the good light is at the ends of the day, so building in an afternoon that is allowed to be empty is not lost time.

Read the getting around guide with this in mind: the transport choices are what set the pace of everything else.

Heat, sun and hydration

Sun at altitude near the equator is stronger than the temperature suggests, and dehydration arrives quietly. Hat, high factor sunscreen, and more water than feels necessary. Mornings on the crater rim are cold, so the layers in the packing list matter in both directions.

Talk to us early

Tell us about mobility, medical conditions and stamina at the planning stage, in specifics. It changes which properties we propose and how far apart we place them, and it is far easier to design around at the start than to repair midway through a trip.
