Accessible Travel in Tanzania

The short version

Tanzania can be travelled with mobility needs, and it takes more planning than a European city break. We would rather set that out honestly than promise a frictionless trip and let you find out on arrival.

The determining factors are usually vehicles, ground surfaces and distance from medical care, not attitudes. Tanzanians we work with are generally accommodating; the built environment is the constraint.

Vehicles

The standard safari vehicle is high off the ground, which is what makes it good for game viewing and difficult for transfers. Getting in and out is the daily reality of a safari, several times a day, often on uneven ground. This is the single most important thing to discuss before booking, and it is solvable more often than people assume, with the right vehicle and the right support.

Lodges and camps

Accessibility varies enormously and is not reliably described in brochures. Some lodges have genuinely step free rooms and paths; many are built as separate units connected by sand, gravel or raised walkways, occasionally with steps that appear in no photograph. Tented camps are the least predictable.

We check specific properties against specific needs rather than trusting a general accessibility claim, and we ask the property questions that require a real answer.

Stone Town

Stone Town's historic core is a dense lattice of narrow lanes with uneven surfaces, and its character is inseparable from that. Wheeled access is limited in places and some routes are simply not passable. It is still very much worth visiting, with a route planned in advance rather than improvised.

Altitude and distance

Much of the northern safari circuit sits at altitude, which affects people with cardiac and respiratory conditions independently of mobility. Parks are also a long way from major hospitals, and evacuation is by air. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is not optional on this itinerary.

We will tell you which parts of a proposed itinerary work, which need a different property or vehicle, and which we think you should drop. That last conversation is the one that makes the difference, and we would rather have it at the planning stage than have you discover the answer at a lodge entrance.
