Panama Weather Guide

At sea level Panama is warm and humid in every month of the year, and the daily range is larger than the annual one. Planning around temperature is therefore wasted effort. Plan around rain, around which coast, and around altitude.

The Pacific side

Panama City, the Azuero peninsula and the Pearl Islands have the clearest seasons in the country: dry and bright from December to April, wet from May to November with heavy afternoon downpours. The city is hot and the humidity is the part that tires people out rather than the thermometer. Buildings are air conditioned aggressively, which is its own reason to carry a layer.

The Caribbean side

Bocas del Toro, Portobelo, Colon and Guna Yala are wetter year round and lack a clean dry season. Rain arrives in shorter, harder bursts and can fall in any month. The compensating pattern is a bright spell around September and October, when the Pacific side is at its wettest.

The highlands

Boquete, Volcan and Cerro Punta sit between roughly 1,200 and 2,000 m and are genuinely cool, with cold nights and frequent cloud. Bajareque, a fine wind driven mist that comes over the mountains, is a local specialty and it is why the coffee here is what it is. Volcan Baru, the highest point in the country at 3,475 m, is cold at the summit at any time of year and people climb it overnight to stand on the one spot from which both oceans are visible on a clear morning.

Altitude sickness is a real risk on that climb, which gains most of its height in a single push. Acclimatize before you go higher, never during: spend a night in Boquete first, and treat a headache that does not settle as a reason to turn back rather than to press on.

Humidity, and what it changes

• Clothes do not dry. Pack fabrics that do, and expect anything cotton left in a bag to smell of the jungle by the third day.
• Electronics dislike the transition from an air conditioned room to the outside. A sealed bag and a silica sachet cost nothing.
