Morocco Visa and Entry Requirements

Entry rules change, and they change without notice. This page explains the shape of Morocco’s requirements and where the current version is published. It is not a substitute for the authority that sets them. Confirm every point below with your own government’s travel information and with a Moroccan consulate before you book anything you cannot change.

We deliberately publish no fees, no validity periods and no processing times on this page. Those are exactly the values that move, and a stale number here could stop someone boarding.

Do you need a visa?

Morocco waives short-stay visitor visas for citizens of a long list of countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the European Union member states. For those passport holders a tourist trip normally needs no visa applied for in advance.

Three things are worth understanding about that:

• The list is a list. Exemption attaches to your nationality, not to your residence or your ticket. If you hold a passport that is not on it, you apply in advance through a Moroccan consulate.
• Exemption is for tourism and business visits. Working, studying, volunteering or a long stay is a different permission, applied for before travel.
• There is a maximum stay, and overstaying it has consequences at the border on the way out and on any future visit. Check the current figure rather than assuming it.

Your passport

Morocco requires a passport valid for a period beyond your date of entry, and airlines enforce that at check-in whether or not the border would. Leave blank pages for stamps. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before you travel rather than testing where the line falls.

Arriving

Most visitors on the imperial cities circuit arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V, and many leave from Marrakesh Menara. Expect an arrival card, a passport stamp, and questions about where you are staying, so have your first hotel address written down rather than on a phone you are holding in a queue.

Morocco also operates an official online portal for arrival formalities and traveler declarations. Where a declaration is required, doing it before you land is faster than doing it in the hall.

Money at the border

The dirham is a closed currency, and there are limits on carrying it in and out of the country. Foreign currency above a threshold has to be declared on arrival. Both matter more than travelers expect, and both are covered in the Morocco currency and money guide.

Health

No vaccination certificate is ordinarily required for entry from Europe or North America. That is a different question from what is medically advisable, which is covered in the Morocco travel safety guide. Check the current position with a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure.
