Guatemala Visa and Entry Requirements

⚠ What a United States passport holder must hold in order to enter Guatemala for tourism is deliberately absent from this page. Your passport

• Valid for at least six months beyond the date you arrive.
• Carrying at least two blank pages.

The blank pages condition is the one that goes unnoticed. A passport that is full but unexpired is a passport that can be refused, and it is not a problem that can be solved at the airport.

The online immigration declaration

Guatemala requires an online immigration declaration to be completed before entering the country and again before leaving it. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and it is not optional. File it before you travel rather than in the departures hall, where the connection is worse than you expect.

The departure tax

There is an airport departure tax of thirty US dollars. It is normally included in the price of an international ticket, so most travelers never see it as a separate charge. Check your fare breakdown once rather than assume it either way.

⚠ Yellow fever, and the clause that catches people

The cited health source records the yellow fever vaccine as not recommended for Guatemala itself, and not required for travel arriving direct from the United States. It is required for travelers aged one year and over arriving from a country with a risk of transmission.

The part worth reading twice: that rule counts an airport transit or layover of more than twelve hours in such a country. A long connection on a cheap routing can therefore make a certificate an entry requirement on a journey that never otherwise goes near a risk area, and the airline will check it at the gate rather than on arrival. Read your whole itinerary, not just its endpoints.

Traveling with children

A child traveling with only one parent, or traveling alone, needs a notarized letter of authorization in Spanish from the absent parent or parents. Arrange it well ahead: notarization and translation are not fast.
