The quick answer
November to March. Warm bright days, cool evenings, low humidity and the whole outdoor life of both cities working properly: beaches, the creek, the desert, the terraces and the event calendar. It is also peak season, so it costs the most and books out.
From June to September the heat is severe and humid, and the cities move indoors. There is still a good trip to be had, at a fraction of the price, but it is an indoor one.
The year
November to March
The reason people come. Days warm enough for the beach, evenings cool enough to sit outside, and almost no rain. December and January can be genuinely cool after dark, and the desert at night is cold. Everything outdoor happens now.
April, May and October
The shoulders, and the value. April and October are hot but usable if you plan around the middle of the day, and hotel rates drop sharply from the winter peak. May is hotter again and humidity is building. For a visitor who wants the pools, the malls and the museums with a little outdoor time early and late, these months are the sensible compromise.
June to September
Extreme. High temperatures combined with Gulf humidity make sustained time outdoors genuinely unwise, and the sea is too warm to cool you down. Both cities are built for it: covered walkways, cooled bus shelters, enormous malls, indoor ski slopes and aquariums. Hotel prices are at their lowest and the service is at its most attentive. Plan an indoor trip and it works; plan a walking one and it does not.
Ramadan
Ramadan moves through the calendar each year and no dates appear on this page. Check when it falls before you book.
Both cities remain open to visitors during Ramadan and hotels make arrangements, but the rhythm changes completely: quiet days, shortened hours, and an extraordinary atmosphere after sunset when iftar begins. Eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight is not done. Live entertainment and music are reduced. Many visitors find it the most interesting time to be here; nobody should arrive without knowing.
Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and when
The two are ninety minutes apart and share a climate, so the season is the same. What differs is character: Dubai is denser, faster and more commercial; Abu Dhabi is more spread out, more deliberately cultural and generally quieter. Most itineraries base in one and day-trip to the other, and the cool months are when that drive is worth doing more than once.
What the month decides
- Desert. Wonderful in winter, punishing in summer.
- Beaches and outdoor pools. Perfect in winter; in high summer even the sea offers no relief.
- Events. The shopping, sport and cultural calendars cluster in the cool months.
- Prices. Highest December to February, lowest in high summer, by a wide margin.
