The quick answer
Entering Qatar is straightforward for most visitors from Europe, North America and much of Asia: a large number of nationalities are granted entry on arrival without arranging a visa first, and the process at Hamad International is quick and modern. Other nationalities apply in advance. The list is set by the Ministry of Interior and it is the only list worth relying on.
This page publishes no number of days, no fee and no passport-validity figure. Each is set by the authority and each has changed.
How entry works
For a visa-free arrival you present your passport, and you may be asked for confirmed accommodation and a return or onward ticket. Entry is granted for a period set by your nationality and recorded on arrival; extensions have their own process and are not automatic. Check what you were actually given rather than what a website said before you left.
Qatar operates an online platform for entry permits and for event-related travel, and the exact route to a permit has changed more than once. Start from the Ministry of Interior or Visit Qatar rather than from a third-party site offering to do it for you.
⚠ Medication, which is the part to take seriously
This is the single most important paragraph on this page. Qatar controls a wide range of substances, and medicines that are ordinary prescriptions elsewhere can be controlled or prohibited here, including some painkillers, sleeping tablets, some psychiatric medication and preparations containing codeine. Some over-the-counter products from home fall into the same category.
Travelers have been detained at the airport over medication they were carrying legally in their own country. Before you travel:
- Check your specific medicines against the current Qatari rules rather than assuming.
- Carry everything in its original labeled packaging.
- Carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor's letter, ideally in English or Arabic.
- If anything is questionable, get written confirmation before departure rather than at the counter.
The same care applies to anything containing cannabis or CBD, which is legal in parts of the United States and is not legal here.
Other customs points
Alcohol may not be brought in by visitors. Pork products, e-cigarettes and vaping equipment, and material considered offensive are all restricted or prohibited, and the rules on some of these have changed. Drones require permission. If in doubt, do not pack it.
Health documents
Qatar may require proof of yellow fever vaccination from travelers arriving from countries where the disease is present, which affects multi-country itineraries rather than direct flights from Europe or North America. Check the CDC guidance for current requirements and allow time for any certificate to take effect.
Leaving and stopovers
Departure is straightforward. If you are transiting, note that leaving the airport requires entering the country properly, so the entry rules above apply to a stopover exactly as they do to a stay. Qatar promotes stopovers actively and there are arranged transit and hotel products; they are worth using and they do not exempt you from anything above.
