The Best Time to Visit Cozumel

The month was chosen for you. The hours are yours.

Cozumel is an island off the Caribbean coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, and its main town is San Miguel. Most visitors arrive on a ship that ties up in the morning and sails in the afternoon, which means the season was settled when the itinerary was booked. The only calendar genuinely yours is the one that runs from the gangway to the all aboard time.

So the useful question is not which month. It is how many hours you have, how far you are willing to travel inside them, and what you want to have done before the ship pulls away.

One season does still matter, and two sources agree on it.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office states that the hurricane season in Mexico normally runs from June to November and can affect both coasts, and it points readers to the US National Hurricane Center. The Center puts it more precisely on its own climatology page: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and on a 1991 to 2020 climate period an average season carries 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes at Category 3 or above.

Two independent sources agreeing is worth saying as such, because a single source repeated twice can look like agreement. What follows for a port call is modest but real: a ship can be rerouted, and a call in that window is a call that may not happen. That is a matter for your line rather than for this page.

What this page will not tell you.

It gives no average temperature, no rainfall figure, no water temperature and no single best month for this island. No source in this cluster register publishes any of them, and a number invented to fill the gap would read exactly like a researched one. The official entry advice records a state entry tax for Quintana Roo, and describes paying and proving it at an airport rather than at a pier. The entry guide sets out exactly what the source says and what it leaves open, and the honest answer is to ask your line before you sail.
