⚠ Leave this at home, whatever the law says where you live

Start here, because it is the only item on this page that can end a trip on arrival. The Cayman Islands operates a zero tolerance policy on illegal and controlled substances, and that explicitly covers cannabis in all forms together with THC and CBD derivatives such as gummies, vapes and edibles. Possession or importation can lead to arrest, fines or imprisonment, and screening on arrival is described by the authorities themselves as thorough.

This catches people out precisely because these products are sold openly in many US states and increasingly elsewhere. A CBD gummy bought legally from a pharmacy counter is still a controlled substance at this border. Check your bag, your toiletry case and your carry on before you leave.

Documents

• Your passport or other accepted identity document, valid beyond the date of your return ticket.
• A paid up return or onward ticket, which is a requirement rather than a formality.
• Evidence you can support yourself, which an officer may ask to see.
• Somewhere safe to keep the immigration card you are handed on arrival, since you must produce it when you leave.

Keep copies. A photograph on a phone and a printed sheet in a separate bag cover the two ways documents usually go missing.

Health preparation belongs in the packing window

Official advice is to begin health preparation at least eight weeks before your trip. That is a packing list item in the sense that matters: it is the thing you cannot do the night before. Speak to a clinician about routine vaccinations and about whether hepatitis A or typhoid vaccination is appropriate for you.

Pack any prescription medicine in its original labeled packaging, with enough for the trip and a margin, and carry it rather than checking it.

If you are traveling between June and November

Hurricane season normally runs from June to November. That does not change your clothes. It changes your contingencies: a power bank that is actually charged, a copy of your insurance policy that does not depend on a signal, and the territory National Emergency Notification System app installed on your phone.

For the water

Much of what visitors come to the Cayman Islands to do happens in or on the sea. Pack for that first and for evenings second. Reef safe sun protection, something to cover up in, and shoes you can walk on rough shoreline in will all earn their space.

• Prescriptions in labeled packaging, carried not checked.
