Cayman Islands Travel Safety Guide

⚠ Who actually helps you here

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory, so there is no British Embassy. The Cayman Islands authorities are the ones who will support you if you need help. That changes where you go for help: local police, local health services and your insurer, rather than a diplomatic mission.

Travelers from other countries should establish before departure what consular help, if any, their own government maintains for this territory. It is not a question to start asking on a bad day.

The emergency number

In an emergency, call 911 and ask for an ambulance. That is the cited instruction and it is the only number on this page.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment. Insurance should cover your itinerary and your planned activities, and it should cover unexpected medical evacuation, which for an island destination is the expensive part.

Health before you go

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hepatitis A vaccination for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the Cayman Islands, and suggests considering a typhoid vaccine depending on where you are going and how long you are staying.

Two things it records are worth knowing because they remove a worry rather than adding one. Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in the Cayman Islands, and yellow fever vaccination is neither recommended nor required for entry. Begin the conversation with a clinician at least eight weeks before you travel, because some courses need that long.

⚠ The law visitors most often underestimate

The Cayman Islands operates a zero tolerance policy on illegal and controlled substances, covering cannabis in all forms including THC and CBD derivatives such as gummies, vapes and edibles. Arrest, fines and imprisonment are the stated consequences, and arrival screening is thorough.

This is the single most likely way for an otherwise uneventful trip to go badly wrong, because the products involved are ordinary retail items in much of the United States. Legality at home has no bearing at this border.

Hurricane season and alerts

Hurricane season normally runs from June to November. During it, monitor local news and check World Meteorological Organization reports for the Cayman Islands alongside the territory own weather service.

Install the National Emergency Notification System, the government free app delivering alerts by email, SMS and app notification, available to residents and visitors alike. Install it on arrival rather than at the moment you need it.

Terrorism

Official advice records a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting British interests and nationals. That is a global statement rather than one specific to these islands, and it is reported here as what it is rather than translated into a local warning it does not make.

• 911 for an ambulance, and call your insurer as soon as you are referred for treatment.
• Insure for medical evacuation, not just treatment.
• Carry nothing containing THC or CBD.
• Install the National Emergency Notification System app when you land.
