Cayman Islands Currency and Money Guide

The currency, the cash declaration threshold, and a rate this guide refuses to quote

Updated 4 min read

The currency

The official currency of the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands dollar. It is issued and redeemed by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, the territory own central monetary body. This is not a place that uses another country currency as its own, and the distinction matters when you are reading prices.

⚠ Why there is no exchange rate on this page

You will find a Cayman Islands dollar rate quoted in a great many travel articles. This guide does not carry one.

The reason is narrow and deliberate. The Monetary Authority is the right body to publish that figure, and on the pages this research could reach it states the currency name and its own responsibility for issuing it, and states no rate. A number typed here would therefore be one recalled from somewhere else, unattached to any source a reader could check. On a page about money that is the worst kind of error, because it is the kind people act on.

Check the rate with your own bank, your card issuer or the Monetary Authority at the time you travel. Rates move; a travel guide does not.

⚠ The cash declaration threshold

You must make a customs declaration if you bring in more than 10,000 Cayman Islands dollars, or the same amount in foreign cash. This is a documented requirement, not a guideline, and it applies to the total you are carrying rather than to any single note or currency.

Declaring is straightforward. Failing to declare is the problem, and Customs and Border Control warns separately that providing false information on a customs form carries fines and legal consequences.

Proof of funds

Quite separately from the declaration threshold, a visitor may be required to satisfy a Customs and Border Control officer that they have sufficient funds to support themselves, and any dependants, for the period of their stay. In practice this is rarely asked, and it is easier to answer with a card statement on a phone than with an explanation.

Practical

  • Expect prices in Cayman Islands dollars and know which currency a menu or tag is using before you pay.
  • Check the exchange rate at the time you travel, from your bank or the Monetary Authority.
  • Declare cash over the 10,000 dollar threshold, counting all currencies together.
  • Be able to show funds if asked, and answer the customs form honestly.
