Belize Currency and Money Guide

The currency, from a source that states it.

That English is the official language is genuinely unusual on this coast and it changes the practical experience of handling money: prices, receipts and disputes are conducted in a language most of our travelers already read. It does not mean it is the only language spoken, and the culture and etiquette guide is the better place for what else you will hear.

Both come from the entry rules rather than from any financial source, and both are useful because they are fixed amounts rather than estimates.

Extending a stay beyond the thirty days costs 200 Belize dollars for each additional 30 days, paid at an office of the Belize Immigration and Nationality Department.

Leaving overland, or by water crossing to Guatemala or Mexico, carries a departure tax of 40 Belize dollars or 20 US dollars, payable at the border. Leaving by air, it is usually included in the airfare already.

No source in this cluster's register publishes one. That is the fourth destination in this series to end up here, and each time for a different reason: one published its rates only through a script this crawl cannot run, one moved the page and left a dead link, one sat behind a bot challenge, and this one simply has no rate in any source the register contains.

There is a tempting shortcut and it is wrong. The departure tax above is quoted in two currencies, and it would be easy to divide one by the other and present the result as a rate. It is not a rate. It is one charge, set in round numbers, stated in two currencies for the convenience of people paying at a border. Turning it into arithmetic would be our inference rather than the source's statement, and it would be published as though it were checked.

The practical advice that survives the gap: check the rate with your own bank on the day, and carry the border tax in cash if your route crosses a land or water frontier, because that is the one payment on this page with a place and a moment attached to it.
