Los Glaciares National Park lies in the southwest of Santa Cruz Province, in the Argentine part of Patagonia. UNESCO inscribed it in 1981 under criteria (vii) and (viii), which is to say for exceptional natural beauty and for the record it holds of the earth's history. The property covers 726,927 hectares.
It takes its name from the ice. The southern ice field above it is the largest outside the polar regions, and it is a long standing joint project with neighboring Chile, with a history of more than two decades of shared work.
What is actually here
Rugged towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes, of which the largest is Lake Argentino, 160 kilometers long. At its farthest end three glaciers meet and drop their ice into milky gray glacial water, launching icebergs into the lake with considerable noise. That noise is a large part of why people come.
The park divides in practice into two halves that are visited from two different towns, and confusing them is the commonest planning error.
- El Calafate is the base for the southern half and for the Perito Moreno glacier, which is the one reached by road and viewed from a system of walkways.
- El Chalten is the base for the northern half, for the Fitz Roy massif and for the trekking. It is several hours away by road and is not a day trip from the other.
Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno is unusual among the world's large glaciers in that it is easy to reach and is not obviously retreating. A network of metal walkways descends the facing hillside, so a visitor with limited mobility can see the front of the glacier from close range without walking on ice at all. Boats run on the lake in front of it, and ice walks on the surface are sold separately and require a guide.
The ice calves without warning and the walkways exist partly to keep people at a safe distance from the water when it does. Stay on them.
El Chalten and Fitz Roy
The granite spires of the Fitz Roy massif are the reason the northern half of the park exists on most itineraries. Trails run from the village itself, which means the walking here needs no vehicle and no permit, and the classic viewpoints are a full day on foot.
The weather decides everything. Fitz Roy is cloud covered a great deal of the time and travelers regularly spend three days in El Chalten without seeing it. Build that in rather than booking a single night and hoping.
Practicalities
The season is the austral summer, roughly November through March, when the days are long and the boats run most reliably. Shoulder months are quieter and less certain. The best time guide works through the trade off.
The wind is constant and is the single thing visitors underestimate. A warm jacket that is not windproof will not do the job here. The packing list is built around exactly this problem, and the sun off ice and water burns people on cold days.
Neither the yellow fever recommendation nor any other tropical health question applies at this latitude: the vaccine is recommended for Corrientes and Misiones Provinces, far to the north, and it is not an entry requirement for Argentina. What does apply is ordinary preparation for cold, wind and distance from medical help. The emergency medical number in Argentina is 107, or 911, and ask for an ambulance.
Verify Before You Travel
Park access, boat schedules and the ice walk operators change between seasons. Confirm with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre record for Los Glaciares for the heritage position and with the park administration for current access before you fix dates.
