The quick answer
Alaska is a US state. If you are a US citizen there is no visa, no border and no customs on the way in. There are still two things that catch people out, and the second one catches a great many.
- Domestic air travel requires identification that meets the federal standard.
- Most Alaska cruises call at a Canadian port, which makes your trip an international trip and means you need what Canada requires.

Why your cruise stops in Canada
Almost all large cruise ships are registered outside the United States, and US law does not allow a foreign-flagged ship to carry passengers between two US ports without calling somewhere foreign in between. For a sailing that starts in Seattle and visits Alaska, the nearest foreign somewhere is British Columbia, which is why Victoria and Vancouver appear on itineraries that otherwise have no obvious reason to go there.
The practical consequence is the whole point of this page: you are entering Canada, even if only for an evening, and you need the travel documents Canada asks of your nationality. Every year passengers arrive at a Seattle pier with a driving license and are refused boarding.
Two caveats worth knowing. Some itineraries, particularly those that begin and end in Vancouver, are structured differently. And this requirement has been temporarily suspended in the past and legislation to exempt Alaska has been proposed more than once, so it is a rule that is genuinely argued about. Check what your specific sailing does rather than assuming, and assume you need a passport until your cruise line tells you otherwise in writing.
Flying within the United States
Domestic flights require identification meeting the federal REAL ID standard, or an acceptable alternative such as a passport or a military ID. If your driving license does not carry the compliant marking, either upgrade it well in advance or travel with your passport. Alaska is a long way to be turned back from a security line.
Driving to Alaska
The road route from the contiguous United States crosses Canada, twice if you are returning the same way. That is a full international border crossing in each direction, with everything that implies for documents, for what you are carrying, and for pets, firearms and cannabis, all of which are treated differently on the two sides. The same applies to the Alaska Marine Highway ferries that call at Prince Rupert in British Columbia.
International visitors
Alaska is entered under the same rules as any other part of the United States. Depending on your nationality that means either a visa or an approved travel authorization obtained before departure, and the requirement is the same whether you land in Anchorage or in Atlanta. If your itinerary includes a Canadian port, you need Canada's permissions as well as America's, and the two are separate applications with separate outcomes.
Practical points
- Carry a passport for any Alaska cruise unless you have confirmed in writing that yours does not need one.
- Check that the name on your booking matches your document exactly.
- Travel insurance matters more here than for a domestic trip, because the medical facilities are concentrated in a few cities and evacuation from a remote lodge is expensive.
- If you are driving or taking a vehicle on the ferry, look up the border rules for what is in your vehicle before you set off.
