Staying Safe in the Turks and Caicos

The emergency number

Call 911 and ask for an ambulance. That is the published instruction, stated without qualification. Contact your insurance company quickly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Where the hospitals are, and what happens if they cannot treat you

There are hospitals on Providenciales and Grand Turk. They provide diagnostic services, primary care, outpatient clinics, emergency services and inpatient care.

If the local hospitals cannot treat a patient, they can make a medical referral, and that referral is usually regional but could be to South America or the USA. This is the single most important line in the health advice, because it turns travel insurance from a formality into infrastructure. The instruction that follows it is explicit: make sure your insurance is comprehensive and covers medical evacuation.

⚠ A lost passport cannot be replaced here

There is no British Embassy or High Commission in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and you will not be able to get a replacement passport locally. The route is to apply online for an emergency travel document.

The practical consequences are ordinary and worth acting on: keep the passport somewhere that survives a boat trip, keep a separate record of it, and know how you would get online without the bag it was in. Our packing guide covers the mechanics.

Health preparation, and one medication note

Begin at least 8 weeks before your trip. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the Turks and Caicos Islands, and lists typhoid as a vaccine to consider. Mosquito borne illness is among the risks the official advice names for these islands.

On rabies the record is specific and slightly unusual: dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in the Turks and Caicos Islands, but rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban or urban medical facilities. The low risk and the limited availability are two separate statements and both are worth holding.

In the water

If you are diving, the official advice is to ask to see a dive operator's credentials, check that safety equipment looks to be in good condition, make sure oxygen is available on the boat, and get advice on the safe depth for your dive. If you are diving or snorkeling, leave details of your trip and an expected time of return with somebody who will notice you are late.

Hurricane season normally runs from June to November, and earthquakes could be a risk. Both point to the same territory agency, the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies.

Who helps a British traveler here

The Turks and Caicos Islands is a British Overseas Territory, and the Turks and Caicos Islands government will support you if you need help. That is the wording, and it is not the same as a consulate. If you hold another passport, find your own country's arrangements for this territory before you travel.
