Who writes these rules

The Turks and Caicos Islands is a British Overseas Territory, not an independent country, and it runs its own border. The advice below is what the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office publishes for British passport holders arriving here. If you hold any other passport, that is the first thing to establish with the Turks and Caicos Islands immigration department, because nothing on this page was written about your document.

Your passport: the validity rule is shorter than the habit

The requirement is that your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. It does not need six months of validity beyond your return date.

That is worth reading twice, because a great many destinations do impose a flat six month rule and travelers carry the habit with them. The practical risk runs in an unexpected direction: an airline check in desk applies whatever rule it has been given, so if yours is working from the six month habit you want to find that out before you are standing at it.

How long you may stay

On arrival the immigration department will normally give permission to stay for up to 90 days. Border officials may also ask to see a return or onward ticket.

⚠ This is the number most likely to be carried in wrongly from a neighboring territory. The Cayman Islands, also a British Overseas Territory and often mentioned in the same breath, grants permission to land for a far longer period. Ninety days is the figure here, and an assumption that the two match is an assumption that can leave you overstaying.

Working is a separate question entirely

You need a permit to work on any of the islands. A visitor permission is permission to visit. Remote work, a paid short contract and an unpaid but productive arrangement are all questions to put to the immigration department before you travel rather than after you arrive, because the answer determines which document you need at the border.

If something goes wrong with the document

There is one consequence of the territory's status that changes how you should pack. There is no British Embassy or High Commission in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and a replacement passport cannot be obtained locally. The route is to apply online for an emergency travel document.
