Best Time to Visit Seychelles

April, October and November, and why every other month is fine if you pick the right coast

Updated 3 min read

The short version

April, October and November. They sit between the two wind seasons, the sea is at its calmest on both coasts at once, and the choice of where to stay stops mattering.

That is the tidy answer, and it is worth immediately qualifying: Seychelles does not have a bad month. It has months in which one coast is better than the other, and the whole skill of planning a trip here is knowing which.

Choose by the coast, not by the month

  • December to March, the northwest monsoon. Hotter, wetter, stiller air. The east coast is the sheltered side. Swimming on the west coast is the one the FCDO warns about in these months.
  • May to September, the southeast trades. Cooler, drier, breezier. The west coast is the sheltered side, and the east is the one to be careful on.
  • April, October, November. The turn. Least wind, calmest water, best visibility under it.

Choose by what you came for

The beach and the lagoon

Any month, on the correct coast. Book accommodation that lets you reach both sides of an island, or choose the island and the side deliberately, rather than booking the photograph.

Diving and snorkeling

The turning months, for visibility and calm. Operators run all year and will tell you honestly which site is workable in a given week, which is worth more than a chart. Ask them rather than a guidebook.

Walking

The southeast trade season, May to September, is drier and cooler and the granite is less slippery. The forest is comfortable in any season because it is shaded.

The Vallée de Mai

Any month. Go early in the day for the light and for the quiet, and see Vallée de Mai: Visitor and Heritage Guide.

Timing for the calendar

The Moutya, the drum dance inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, is the living tradition most worth timing a trip around, and it is performed at community occasions rather than on a fixed tourist schedule. Creole Festival in late October is the largest cultural event of the year and sits inside one of the calm months, which is a genuine reason to choose it. See Seychelles Festivals and Celebrations.

How long to allow

Ten days is a comfortable trip across two or three islands. A week works if you commit to two. Any itinerary that tries for four islands in a week spends most of it on a ferry, and the ferry is the part weather can take away from you. See Getting Around Seychelles.
