Panama Visa and Entry Requirements

⚠ What a United States passport holder must hold in order to enter Panama for tourism is deliberately absent from this page. The three month allowance recorded in the source this cluster cites was written for a different nationality, and it does not transfer. Confirm your own position with the Panamanian consulate responsible for your state, close to travel, and treat everything below as the conditions that apply on top of whatever that answer is.

⚠ Your passport, and the end it is counted from

The cited source requires a passport valid for at least six months after the day you plan to leave Panama. Almost every other country in this region counts six months from the day you arrive, so a passport that clears the usual rule can still fail this one on a long trip. Work it out from your return date, not your outbound.

A return or onward ticket

You can be asked to show one, and the airline will often ask before the border does, because the airline carries the cost of flying you home again. A onward bus ticket out of the country counts where the route is served. Have it on your phone and not only in an email you would have to find.

⚠ Proof of funds

The cited source records that you can be asked to prove you have at least 1,000 US dollars available. This is the condition visitors are least likely to have heard of and it is real. A recent bank statement, a credit card, or cash will normally satisfy it; being unable to satisfy it at a desk at midnight is a poor position to be in. It is rarely asked for and it is not worth being the person it is asked of.

Yellow fever, and where you have been

The cited health source records that vaccination is not required for travel arriving direct from the United States. It is required for travelers aged one year and over arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, so the condition is where your journey has been rather than where it is going.

On arrival

• Most visitors land at Tocumen, which is a large and genuinely busy hub. Allow more connection time than the schedule suggests.
• There is no currency to obtain. Panama uses the United States dollar, so a machine in the arrivals hall dispenses exactly what you already carry. See the money guide.
• Keep your accommodation address written down. It is asked for on arrival and a hotel name alone is sometimes not enough.
