Mozambique Visa and Entry Requirements

The short version

Apply online, in advance, and do not plan to pay on arrival. That single sentence is the difference between a smooth arrival and a very bad day at the airport.

What the authorization is

The FCDO states that British passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation before traveling to Mozambique for tourism or business visits of up to 30 days, applied for through the official Mozambique eVisa portal.

Its published detail is specific and worth following exactly:

• Apply at least 5 working days before you travel.
• Pay online when you apply. You cannot pay at the border.
• Processing can take at least 5 working days, so apply well in advance of your travel date.
• The fee is approximately 47 US dollars, made up of a 37 US dollars visa fee and a 650 Mozambican Metical processing fee.

⚠ That is British government guidance for British passport holders. This is the one part of a trip where nationality changes the answer, and we are not going to restate it as though it were universal. Confirm the requirement for the passport you actually hold, with the Mozambican embassy or high commission that covers you, before you book anything that cannot be changed.

Your passport

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Mozambique. The FCDO is blunt about the consequence: you will be denied entry if your documents do not meet the requirements. Check the actual page of your passport rather than remembering, and check it early enough to renew.

What you may be asked for on arrival

The FCDO lists three things an officer may ask to see:

• proof of accommodation;
• a return or onward ticket;
• proof that you have enough money to support yourself.

None of these is unusual. All three are easier to produce as a printout than as an email you are trying to find on airport wifi.

Vaccination certificates

Two certificates may be required at the border:

• a yellow fever vaccination certificate, if you are arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk;
• a polio vaccine certificate in certain circumstances.

Note the shape of the yellow fever rule. It is about where you have been, not about Mozambique. A direct flight from the United States does not normally trigger it; a routing through a transmission-risk country can. If your itinerary includes a stop in one, resolve this before you fly.

Separately from the border rule, the CDC recommends prescription medicine to prevent malaria for travel to Mozambique. That is a health decision to make with a doctor several weeks ahead, not a document to produce at immigration.

Traveling with a minor

The FCDO notes that a notarized parental consent affidavit, not older than three months, is required in the circumstances it describes. If a child is traveling without both parents, read that section in full rather than taking a summary of it, including ours.

Customs

There are strict rules about goods you can take into and out of Mozambique. If you are carrying anything beyond ordinary personal effects, and particularly anything that could be described as an antiquity or as wildlife product, check before you pack rather than at the desk.

The practical order of operations

1. Check your passport expiry against your arrival date, today.
2. Confirm the entry requirement for your own nationality with the relevant Mozambican mission.
3. See a travel clinic at least eight weeks out, which is what the FCDO advises, for vaccines and malaria prevention.
4. Apply and pay online, allowing far more than five working days.
5. Print the authorization, your accommodation booking and your onward ticket.
