Little Cayman Marine Parks and Protected Areas appears on the United Kingdom tentative list, with the year 2023.

A tentative list is an inventory of properties which a State Party intends to consider for nomination. It is a declaration of intent and a first procedural step. It is not the World Heritage List, and nothing in the Cayman Islands is inscribed on that list today.

This guide is emphatic about the distinction because the two are constantly conflated. You will see Little Cayman described as a World Heritage Site; it is not one, and calling it one misrepresents both the place and the tentative process it is currently in.

Why it is filed under the United Kingdom

Because the Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory rather than a sovereign state, it is not itself a State Party to the World Heritage Convention. Any nomination is made by the United Kingdom on the territory behalf, which is why a Caribbean marine park appears on a list otherwise occupied by English parks, Shetland archaeology and York urban core.

That is an administrative fact rather than a diminishing one. It does mean that anyone searching UNESCO records for the Cayman Islands as a country will find nothing, and will conclude wrongly that there is nothing to find.

What is actually there

Little Cayman is the smallest and quietest of the three islands. Its protected marine areas are the reason it carries an international reputation out of all proportion to its size, and the reason a nomination was put forward at all.

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands, a charity established in 1987 to protect biodiversity, local wildlife and critical habitats, works across the Sister Islands alongside the territory own environmental authorities.

Visiting responsibly

A protected marine area under active consideration for nomination is precisely the kind of place where visitor behavior decides the outcome. Use operators who brief properly, keep off the reef, take nothing and follow the local rules on what may be fished and when. Those rules are set by the territory authorities and they are not advisory.

• Describe the status accurately. Tentative list, 2023, filed by the United Kingdom, not inscribed.
• Reaching Little Cayman is a separate flight or boat from Grand Cayman. Plan it as its own leg.
• Dive and snorkel with operators who brief on protected area rules, and follow them.
• Check current local restrictions with the territory authorities before fishing anything.
