The Turks and Caicos for Senior Travelers

Insurance first, and for a specific reason

There are hospitals on Providenciales and Grand Turk. If they cannot treat a patient they make a referral, and that referral is usually regional but could be to South America or the USA. The official instruction is to make sure your insurance is comprehensive and covers medical evacuation.

That is the line to take to your insurer, in those words. A policy that covers treatment but caps evacuation is a policy written for somewhere with more hospitals.

Medication

Pharmacies on all the islands are usually well stocked, but less common medication may only be available from the hospital or from pharmacies on Providenciales. A refill needs a registered physician, who will countersign your prescription or write a new one, and you will usually pay up front and reclaim later.

So: carry the whole trip's supply, in original packaging, with the prescription, and add days for a delayed departure. If your itinerary includes a smaller cay, carry it there too rather than counting on a pharmacy being nearby.

Give the health preparation eight weeks

Begin at least 8 weeks before your trip. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the Turks and Caicos Islands, and lists typhoid as one to consider. For anyone whose schedule needs to be worked around other medication, eight weeks is not generous.

⚠ The driving combination worth declining

Driving is on the left, and most rental cars are left-hand drive. Add limited street lighting away from main roads, livestock that regularly wander on to the road especially on Grand Turk, and an increasing number of accidents on Leeward Highway on Providenciales particularly at night.

None of that says do not drive. It says that if you were going to be cautious about one thing, this is it, and that a taxi after dark is a reasonable decision rather than a concession. Taxis have standard fares on the main islands, may be charged per person, and the fare should be confirmed with the driver before starting. Pace the archipelago

More than 40 islands and cays make up the territory, and each hop is a boat or a flight with its own schedule and its own weather sensitivity. A trip built on two islands and time in each will be easier than one built on four.

Documents

Permission to stay is normally up to 90 days, and your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay rather than six months beyond it.
