Saint Kitts and Nevis Entry Requirements

The requirement almost every summary leaves out.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office states that all visitors to St Kitts and Nevis must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel. It can be applied for online or through the official mobile app.

This is the fact worth carrying away from this page. It is not a visa, and it is not the immigration form. It is a third thing, it applies to everyone, and it has to be done before you travel rather than on arrival. A guide that covers only the visa rule leaves a reader believing they need nothing in advance.

Passport validity, and the rule stated as a date rather than a duration.

To enter, the same source states that your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive. Note the shape of that: it is measured from arrival, not from departure, and not from the day you book.

A traveler is denied entry without a valid travel document, or on a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. Check with your travel provider that your documents meet the requirement, and renew early if the margin is thin.

The visa position, and whose passport it describes.

The advice states that you can visit St Kitts and Nevis without a visa for up to 6 months. That page is written for people traveling on a full British citizen passport, and says so in its own opening line, so it is a statement about one nationality rather than about everybody.

If you hold another passport, the rule for you may differ and this register does not contain it. Check with the St Kitts and Nevis Immigration Department, which administers entry, extensions and work permits for the Federation. An extension of stay must be applied and paid for through that department, and it is illegal to overstay a visa or to work without a work permit.

The immigration form, which you can do twice over if you want to.

Before you travel, complete the immigration form online to speed up your arrival. You can also complete it when you land, using your own device with a data connection or the free public wifi at the airport.

Doing it in advance is the version that saves you time in the hall. Knowing that the second option exists is what saves you from a line if your phone gives out.

Arriving by sea, where the timing is a hard requirement.

A traveler arriving by sea must contact the St Kitts and Nevis Port Authority at least 24 hours before arriving. You must also fill in the immigration form and contact either the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority, for Nevis, or the St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority, for St Kitts.

That 24-hour window is the only entry rule here with a clock attached, and it is the one a yacht arrival is most likely to discover too late.

Vaccination, taxes and goods.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. That is a condition of entry rather than a health recommendation, and it depends on where you have traveled from rather than on your nationality. Arrival and departure tax is usually included in the ticket price of most commercial flights. The exception the source names is a flight operated by LIAT leaving Robert L Bradshaw International Airport, where the departure tax is paid by cash or card at the Airport Finance Office. There are also strict rules about goods taken into or out of the country, and anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty must be declared.
