Mauritius Visa and Entry Requirements

The quick answer

You can visit Mauritius without a visa for up to 60 days. You must complete the Mauritius All in One travel form online before you arrive, and you must be able to show proof of onward or return travel.

⚠ The form is the part people miss

The FCDO is specific. You must fill in the Mauritius All in One travel form online before you arrive, and print a copy with the QR code on it to show officials at the airport. If you have not completed it before arrival you will be asked to fill in an immigration disembarkation card at the airport instead.

Do it before you leave home, and print it. A QR code on a phone with a flat battery at the end of a long flight is not the moment to discover how your airline's charging sockets work.

Your passport

Your passport must:

• be valid for the duration of your stay;
• have one blank page.

That is a notably relaxed rule by regional standards. Neighboring destinations often demand six months beyond arrival, so if you are combining Mauritius with another Indian Ocean country, the stricter rule governs your planning.

On arrival

A border official stamps your passport with the end date of your permitted stay. Check it. That stamp, not your ticket, is what defines how long you may remain.

To stay longer, to work or study, or to travel on business, you must meet the Mauritian government's separate entry requirements.

Health screening

• If you travel to Mauritius from a country where malaria is common, border officials may ask you for a blood sample to meet Ministry of Health requirements. If you are not tested at the airport they may contact you later during your visit.
• Arriving from Réunion, you may be asked questions about your health and recent travel history.
• Ebola. Non-Mauritian nationals who have traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan within the preceding 21 days, and who do not hold a valid work, residence, occupation, business or student permit, are not allowed to enter. Those who do hold one are permitted entry but are subject to a 21-day mandatory quarantine.

The blood-sample rule is worth knowing if you are combining Mauritius with a mainland African itinerary, which many visitors do.

⚠ Medication needs more thought here than usual

You can bring common medicines for your own use, but you must carry a copy of the prescription. And the FCDO says that tranquillizers, hypnotics, narcotics and other strong painkillers require prior authorization, which you check with the Mauritius Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Customs

There are strict rules about goods you may take into or out of Mauritius, and you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. One unusual specific: it is illegal to possess or import cigarette papers.
