Bermuda for Senior Travelers

The reassuring half

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that King Edward VII Memorial Hospital has a good accident and emergency department and that most types of medication are readily available in Bermuda, including UK brands.

For anybody traveling with a regular prescription, that is the answer to the first question. This is not a destination where an ordinary medicine is difficult to obtain or where an urgent problem has nowhere to go.

The expensive half, which is the one to plan for

Medication and medical treatment in Bermuda are very expensive. And cases needing treatment Bermuda cannot provide are usually referred to either Baltimore or Boston in the USA.

Read that as an instruction to your insurer. The cover you need is cover for medical expenses in the United States, which is the most expensive healthcare market in the world, together with repatriation by air ambulance. A policy written for a European or regional trip is a different product, and an older traveler with any pre-existing condition should have that condition named in the policy and confirmed in writing.

Start the process early. The official advice is to begin at least 8 weeks before your trip. That is a health timeline, and it happens to be the right timeline for the insurance conversation too.

Vaccination, in the public health record

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention records hepatitis A as recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Bermuda and hepatitis B as recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Bermuda. Age is not a criterion in either recommendation, so an older traveler is in scope exactly as anybody else is, and the question is simply whether you have had them.

The same record notes that dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Bermuda and that rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office separately notes insect-borne disease including dengue, for which the protection is avoiding bites rather than a vaccine.

None of this is medical advice. Take it to a travel health professional, together with your own history and any medication you take, which is the conversation the eight-week lead time exists for.

Getting around, which is simpler than it sounds

Tourists are not allowed to drive cars in Bermuda. Nobody visiting is behind a wheel, so the buses, ferries and taxis are what everyone uses rather than a fallback for people who have stopped driving.

One thing to decline

Scooters are the workaround many visitors choose, and the record warns that accidents between 50cc scooters and cars are common, with serious injuries and deaths. For an older traveler this is an easy decision to make in advance rather than at a rental desk on the first morning.

The sea, and the date the island uses

There are strong rip currents in many places across Bermuda, and most people in Bermuda do not swim in the sea until after Bermuda Day in late May. A rip current is a strength and stamina problem before it is a swimming one, so the local convention is worth following rather than testing.

Timing

The hurricane season in Bermuda normally runs from June to November. For a traveler for whom a disrupted itinerary is more than an inconvenience, that range argues for a flexible booking and for insurance that covers disruption as well as health.
