The fact that shapes everything else

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records that medical treatment in the Bahamas is of a good standard but can be expensive, and that emergency medical facilities are limited on all the Family Islands, with serious cases transferred to Nassau or Freeport.

For a traveler with a medical condition, a mobility need or a dependence on equipment or medication, that single paragraph is the planning brief. It says that capacity in this country is concentrated on two islands, and that everywhere else is a transfer away from it.

Choosing the island is an access decision

The quiet islands are the ones furthest from a hospital. That is an uncomfortable trade, because the outlying islands are also the ones the same source records as having lower crime rates, and they are what many people come for.

The honest framing is that it is a decision rather than an oversight. If your condition is stable and your needs are predictable, the Family Islands may be entirely reasonable with preparation. If you depend on rapid access to specialist care, the calculation is different, and it is better made now than from a settlement with no hospital.

Insurance has to cover the transfer, not only the treatment

This is the specific thing to check, and it is easy to miss. A policy that covers medical treatment may not cover the cost of moving you between islands or repatriating you. In a country where the official advice explicitly names inter-island transfer as the route to serious care, that clause is not fine print. Confirm it in writing before you travel, and carry the insurer's emergency number somewhere reachable without a phone signal.

Medication and equipment

Bring what you need rather than expecting to source it, particularly if any part of your trip is away from Nassau or Grand Bahama. Carry medication in original labeled packaging with a prescription or letter, split across bags where you can, and take more than the trip length allows for, because a weather disruption inside the hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November can extend a stay without warning. Health preparation

Begin at least 8 weeks before you travel. For a traveler with a condition that affects immunity or interacts with vaccination, that window is the difference between a considered plan and an improvised one. The ambulance numbers in the Bahamas are 911 or 919.

Water activities

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office records the water sports industry as poorly regulated. Where an operator's safety practice is not guaranteed, a traveler who cannot self rescue is carrying more of the risk than the brochure implies.
