Turkey Visa and Entry Requirements

The short version

For a great many nationalities, including British citizens, Turkey is visa-free for short visits: you may enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism. Your passport must be valid for six months from the date you arrive.

The rolling window

This is the part worth reading twice. The ninety days are not ninety days per visit and not ninety days per calendar year. They are ninety days within any rolling one hundred and eighty day period, counted backwards from whichever day you are standing on.

For a single holiday that arithmetic will never trouble you. For anyone making repeat trips, or combining Turkey with a longer run around the region, it is the constraint that decides the itinerary, and border officers do the sum properly.

Your passport

It must be valid for six months from the date you arrive. Counted from arrival, not from departure and not from the day you booked. British citizens must carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement.

Check your own nationality

Visa-free entry is not universal, and the terms differ by passport. What is written above is the FCDO's guidance for British citizens travelling on a full British citizen passport. If you hold a different passport, or a residence permit rather than a citizenship, confirm your own position with the Turkish authorities before booking rather than assuming the rule transfers.

Land borders

Turkey has land frontiers with several countries and they do not all behave alike. The FCDO notes that the border with Iran remains open visa-free for people travelling on UK or Iranian passports for stays of up to ninety days. If you are entering overland rather than flying, make sure officials stamp and date your passport at the crossing, because an unstamped entry becomes your problem on the way out.
