Best Time to Visit Texas

Spring wildflowers, a long hot summer, and a fall that arrives late

Updated 4 min read

Texas covers desert, hill country, piney woods, prairie and a long Gulf coastline, so the honest answer to the season question starts with the map. Even so, a clear pattern holds across the places most visitors go: San Antonio, Austin and the Hill Country, Houston and Galveston, and Dallas and Fort Worth. Spring and fall are the comfortable seasons. Summer is long, hot and in places humid. Winter is mild most days, with the occasional hard cold snap that arrives fast and leaves just as fast.

Spring: wildflowers and the busiest calendar

March through May is the season most people picture. Bluebonnets and other wildflowers color the roadsides of the Hill Country, the evenings are pleasant, and the events calendar is full: the rodeo in Houston runs in March and Fiesta fills San Antonio in April. That combination is also why spring needs booking ahead. Popular state parks fill on spring weekends, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department notes that only a reserved day pass guarantees entry when a park reaches capacity.

Spring is also storm season across much of the state. Strong thunderstorms can bring hail, high wind and sudden flooding, usually in the afternoon and evening. A storm rarely ruins a trip, but it is a reason to read the forecast each morning rather than once before you leave.

Summer: plan the day around the heat

From June into September, heat is the organizing fact of a Texas day. The National Weather Service is plain that heat can be very taxing on the body, and the practical response is to move the outdoor parts of the day to early morning and evening. Museums, the Space Center, river walks in the shade and an afternoon swim fill the middle of the day well. Summer is also when families travel, so hotels near water and attractions fill early.

Hurricane season on the coast

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the National Hurricane Center puts its statistical peak at September 10. This matters most for Galveston, Corpus Christi and the rest of the Gulf Coast, and much less for the Hill Country. A late summer coastal stay is still a reasonable plan; it is simply one to make with flexible bookings and an eye on the forecast in the week before you go.

Fall: the second spring

Fall comes late in Texas. September often still feels like summer, and the comfortable stretch usually begins in October and runs into November. It is a strong season for the Hill Country, for Big Bend in the far west, and for city trips. The State Fair of Texas fills Dallas through late September and October, and football fills stadiums and small towns on Friday nights and Saturdays.

Winter: quiet, mild and occasionally cold

December through February is the quietest season for most attractions, with lower prices and shorter lines. Most days are mild enough for walking tours, though a northern cold front can drop temperatures sharply overnight, and ice is a real hazard on roads when it comes. Pack a warm layer even for a southern Texas winter trip.

The short answer

For a first visit built around cities, history and the Hill Country, aim for March to May or October to November. For the coast, late spring and fall are the most comfortable, and a summer stay works with the heat and the storm season in mind. Whatever the month, check events and park reservations when you fix the dates rather than when you set out.
