Saint Lucia Entry Requirements

Six weeks, a form with a ceiling rather than a deadline, and a stamp you have to ask for

Updated 4 min read

Six weeks, and it is the shortest in this series.

The FCDO states it plainly: you can visit Saint Lucia without a visa, and on entry you will be allowed to stay for a maximum period of 6 weeks.

That number is the reason this page exists in the shape it does. Travelers who island-hop tend to carry an assumption across from wherever they were last, and in this series the neighboring answers are months rather than weeks. Six weeks is generous for a holiday and short for anything else, and it is set by Saint Lucia, not by your ticket.

To stay longer, whether to work, to study, for business or for any other reason, you must meet the Saint Lucian government's own requirements and apply at the Immigration Department in Castries. The advice is blunt about the alternative: it is illegal to overstay the entry period or to work without a work permit.

The online form has a ceiling, not a deadline.

This is the instruction most easily turned upside down. The FCDO says to fill in an online immigration form no more than 3 days before you arrive.

That is an upper bound. Completing it a week or a fortnight ahead is not being organized, it is being too early. The window opens three days out and closes when you land.

If it is not done beforehand, the trip is not lost: the advice says you will be asked to fill in the electronic form on arrival, or a paper form if one is available. But that is a queue you can avoid by getting the timing right rather than getting it early.

Your passport, and the stamp in it.

The validity rule is unusually mild. Your passport must have an expiry date after the day you plan to leave. There is no six-month rule here, which again is not what every neighboring island asks for.

The instruction that matters more is the one travelers skip. Make sure the border control officer puts a stamp in your passport. The advice gives the reason in the next breath: border guards will use passport stamps to check you have not stayed longer than you are allowed.

Read that against the six-week limit and it stops being a formality. The stamp is the evidence of when your six weeks began. If nobody stamps it, the burden of proving your dates is yours, and you will be proving them to the people enforcing an overstay offense.

You will be refused entry without a valid travel document, or if you try to use a passport reported lost or stolen. British citizens returning to the UK must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement, whatever their other nationalities.

Vaccination and customs.

A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk. It is not asked of everyone, and it is asked because of where you have been rather than where you live.

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Saint Lucia, and you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Our packing guide covers one prohibition that surprises people, because it applies to clothing.
