The Dominican Republic publishes its own entry rules through its immigration authority. That authority does not answer requests from the system this guide was researched on, so everything below is cited to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which describes what British passport holders may do.

That matters more than it might look. A British rule is not an American rule or a Canadian one, and this guide will not pretend otherwise. Treat what follows as the shape of the process and check the detail for the passport you actually hold, with your airline or with a Dominican consulate, before you book anything that cannot be changed.

The entry form

Arrival and departure run on one electronic form. It carries your customs declaration together with the international boarding and disembarking record, so it replaces the paper slips handed out on approach in other countries. You can complete it up to seven days before you arrive.

Do it at home. It takes a few minutes with a passport in front of you, and it saves you a line at the end of a flight when nobody is at their most patient.

Passport validity

The requirement recorded for British passport holders is that the passport remains valid for the duration of the visit. That is a shorter requirement than the six months beyond departure that a great many countries impose, and it is worth reading twice, because travelers who have been caught out elsewhere tend to assume the longer rule and occasionally renew when they did not need to.

The shorter rule is the more fragile one in practice. An airline check-in desk applies the rule it has been given, and if yours has the six-month habit you want to know before you are standing at it.

How long you may stay

Tourism is permitted for 30 days. That is the figure to plan around: it is not a six-month stay, and it is not a rolling allowance. A longer trip, or any trip that is not tourism, is a different question with a different answer, and it is one to put to the Dominican authorities rather than to a travel guide.

Before you go

• Complete the entry form in advance, within the seven day window.
• Check the passport rule for your own nationality, not the one quoted above.
• Carry the confirmation, on your phone and on paper. Paper works when a battery does not.
• If your trip is longer than 30 days, or is for work or study, resolve it before departure.
