The hurricane season in the Bahamas runs from 1 June to 30 November, as recorded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It is an official date range rather than a rule of thumb, and it is the only seasonal figure on this page.

What a season actually is

It is a window in which tropical storms form, not a forecast of your particular week. Two things follow from that, and both are practical.

The first is that travel inside the window is normal and the islands are open throughout it. What changes is the value of a flexible booking and of insurance that covers disruption, both of which are worth more in September than in March.

The second is that travel outside the window is not a guarantee. A season describes where the probability sits, and buying a February ticket does not buy certainty about the weather. Read a current forecast close to departure in either case.

Where geography changes the answer

The Bahamas is an archipelago spread across a long stretch of ocean, and conditions are not uniform across it. A storm system affecting one island group can leave another untouched, which is why national advice is issued for the country and local conditions have to be read locally. If you are traveling to one of the Family Islands, check what is happening there rather than what is happening in Nassau.

Preparation is the part you control

Whatever the season, the same preparation applies: register for any alerting service your own government offers, know how your accommodation communicates during a disruption, keep your documents somewhere you can reach quickly, and follow instructions from local authorities rather than from social media. What this guide will not tell you, and why

You will not find an average temperature, a monthly rainfall figure, a sea temperature or a sunshine hours table here. No source in this guide's register publishes one for the Bahamas, and a figure written from memory is indistinguishable on the page from a figure read off a meteorological record. Declining to publish is the honest result. For the week you are traveling, a current forecast is better than any annual average could be.
