Itinerary
Accra is the capital of Ghana. We will do some sightseeing and socialize with locals for cultural exchange. After arriving at the airport in Accra on day 1, the group will be shuttled to the nearby hotel. It will be in the evening so you can sample Accra's lively nightlife and head out to one of the many bars and restaurants that can be found all over the surprising city. Alternatively, you can rest to prepare for the walking tour on the following morning. On day 2 late morning the group will meet for breakfast and do a walking tour before lunch. We will meet with locals throughout the day and have dinner. On day 3 we will have breakfast early morning and shuttle to Kumasi through a 6 hour drive.

Kumasi is the capital city of the Ashanti Region, in southern Ghana. It’s known as a center for Ashanti culture. Leave Accra and sightseeing drive inland for about six hours to the ‘Garden City’ of Kumasi. This one-time capital of a powerful kingdom is nicknamed for its beautiful flora. We will check into the hotel for one nights. We will visit some of the largest open-air markets in West Africa. Here you’ll be able to buy a variety of knick-knacks, clothes, jewelry and Ghanaian food. Next we will visit a cocoa plantation and travel to Elmina the next day.

Elmina is a fishing port on the south coast of Ghana, and It’s known for its beaches and for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, was a base for trading slaves, gold and ivory. To Elmina is a long travel day so you may want to bring a book or a pack of cards to enjoy with your fellow travelers – although there’s plenty of fascinating scenery to keep you occupied. The drive will take seven hours, and on the way, you’ll stop at a cocoa plantation to learn about how this global commodity is grown and harvested. Once you’ve checked into your hotel, enjoy a free evening to explore the fishing port town or relax on the beach after your travels. The next day we will visit the Castle!

Return to Accra to check into a hotel late afternoon and learn to dance Kizomba in the late evening. It is a genre of dance originating in Angola in 1984. On day 8 we will take a day trip to Akosombo, a small town in the south of the Asuogyaman District, Eastern Region. Visit the Akosombo Dam, a hydroelectric dam built on the Volta River. The last day you are free to do more city tours or go to the Accra shopping mall, then travel to airport for a night flight.
